Toy Soldier Salute

Tommy played in the back yard,
Wearing army clothes,
His friends and him used to play war,
The game all boys know.
He used to line up the little army men,
Always facing east.
Cause that's the direction his dad had left,
to join the foreign fight for peace.
He would keep his favorite little soldier
On his window sil
Always saluting to the drive way
At the bottom of the hill.
His mother watched him from the kitchen door,
Holding the phone.
How could she ever tell him,
His dad wouldn't come home?
Then two years later,
A car pulled up to the curb.
And down fell his mother,
Without another word.
Out stepped a sergent
Oh it couldent be true,
It was his father,
Welcomed by Tommy's toy soldier salute.
